Journalist Safety Index:
How Do Journalists Survive in an Increasingly Risky Media Landscape?
Press freedom is not merely a right, but the cornerstone of a healthy democracy. Behind every news story we read, there are journalists working with dedication to report the truth. However, in Indonesia, the reality they face is far from ideal. Physical threats, legal intimidation, digital attacks, and economic pressure continue to loom over those who dare to speak out.
When reporting the facts actually carries risks, we must ask: Is Indonesia truly a haven for press freedom, or is it instead a breeding ground for fear among those dedicated to the truth? Every attack on a journalist not only harms the individual but also undermines the democracy we hold dear. If journalists continue to work in fear, how can we ensure that the public receives honest and balanced information?
The 2024 Journalist Safety Index serves as a reflection of the real-world conditions faced by journalists in Indonesia. Compiled through a collaboration between the Tifa Foundation, the Association for the Development of Indonesian Media (PPMN), and the Human Rights Working Group (HRWG) as part of the Safe Journalism Consortium, and supported by Populix as a research partner, this report is more than just numbers or statistics. It is a representation of journalists’ real-life experiences—a reflection of the challenges they face, as well as a foundation for positive change.
This index serves not only as a monitoring tool but also as a foundation for formulating better policies. By identifying various risks and protection needs, we hope this report will serve as a reference for the government, media organizations, and civil society in creating a safer and more conducive work environment for journalists.
Ultimately, press freedom is not a right that can be simply ignored. If we want a strong and transparent democracy, we must ensure that journalists can work without fear. This index is not the end, but the beginning of a long journey toward creating a better system of protection for those who stand on the front lines in conveying the truth.
