Inequality remains a threat, and silencing continues to reign supreme among those in power who are reluctant to embrace justice. The year 2024 marks the fifth democratic election in Indonesia since the reform era. The ongoing election process and its results remain fraught with various challenges to the very breath of democracy and the struggle for equality. It is in this moment that the Tifa Foundation assumes its vital role in both nurturing and critiquing the practice of democracy, while continuing to walk the path of grassroots work alongside those marginalized and sidelined by the system.

In 2024 as well, Tifa continues to stand amidst a turbulent global current, where geopolitical challenges rage and constrain the space for civil society. Tifa faces the reality that authoritarianism is growing stronger, encroaching on many countries, including Indonesia. Global support is also steadily dwindling, while narratives of hatred and the undermining of justice continue to gain momentum. In the midst of this maelstrom, those who champion the values of justice and freedom are often pushed to the margins. However, as history has always proven, movements born from the people—a small flame burning in the darkness—will never be extinguished.

Tifa is not an organization that sits idly by, waiting for the storm to pass. Tifa is engaged in work rooted in the community—from remote villages to national policy matters that require ongoing monitoring and support for improvement. Through partnerships that continue to grow with various elements of civil society, Tifa seizes every opportunity to build capacity, advocate for justice, and ensure that the basic rights of every individual are upheld, keeping society and the state open and accountable.

Every step Tifa takes embodies its commitment to upholding democratic values, respecting human rights, protecting the vulnerable, and building a more inclusive society. Not only is Tifa an organization active in policy and advocacy, but it also works to directly impact people’s lives, reinforcing the shared understanding that our greatest strength lies in spaces of solidarity and collective action.
