Workshop on Institutionalizing Interfaith Mediation

In the 1990s, Nigeria was plagued by violent interfaith conflict. One of the opposing sides in that conflict was an Islamic group led by Pa and a Christian group led by Pastor James Wuye. For years, both sides continued to attack one another to avenge their brothers and relatives who had fallen victim to the conflict. However, one day, they decided to end their feud and became close allies in fostering peace and putting an end to the conflict.

As a country that is also vulnerable to interfaith conflict, the Tifa Foundation believes that the Indonesian public needs to learn from these two religious leaders from Nigeria. To that end, upon the arrival of Imam Muhammad Ashafa and Pastor James Wuye in Indonesia and in celebration of the Tifa Foundation’s 17th anniversary, we, in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Religion and Democracy (PUSAD) at Paramadina University, will host a peace-building workshop titled “Institutionalizing Interfaith Mediation: A Workshop with Imam Muhammad Ashafa and Pastor James Wuye.

The Tifa Foundation, in collaboration with PUSAD Paramadina, invited 25 participants—including religious leaders, researchers, and peace activists from various cities across Indonesia—to take part in a workshop held on August 29–31, 2017, in Yogyakarta. In this workshop, Imam Muhammad Ashafa and Pastor James Wuye will guide participants in mapping interfaith issues in Indonesia, discussing the institutionalization of interfaith mediation, and designing a roadmap for building peace in Indonesia.
