With support from ABC International Development through the Indonesia Media Program, the Tifa Foundation, in collaboration with the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Indonesia, is organizing a Personal Data Protection Training for Journalists in Jakarta on July 5–7, 2024.

This training program was developed in response to the enactment of Law No. 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection (PDP Law) in Indonesia in October 2022, which imposes responsibilities on media companies and organizations as controllers of personal data. Media companies, organizations, and journalists need to understand the impact of the PDP Law on data processing for journalistic work and other business processes. Additionally, this training aims to enhance journalists’ capacity regarding the principles and best practices of personal data protection in reporting.
Over the course of three days, 30 journalists selected from various cities were invited to gain an understanding of the intricacies of the Personal Data Protection Law and its intersections with the Press Law, the Freedom of Information Law, and the Broadcasting Law. Through quizzes and case studies, the journalists were guided in analyzing how to strike a balance between the principles of personal data protection, press ethics, and the fulfillment of the public interest in their reporting.

On the final day, journalists outlined the steps that need to be taken by the Press Council, media companies, journalists, and other media staff to support the institutionalization of personal data protection within the press ecosystem and to strengthen protections for journalists.

A similar training session will be held again in Makassar in August 2024. Stay tuned for an exciting training session!
