[PRESS RELEASE] The Personal Data Protection Bill: A Cornerstone of Indonesia’s Economy, Innovation, and Digital Transformation

After five sessions of the House of Representatives, the Personal Data Protection Bill has yet to be passed into law. The absence of a law on personal data runs counter to Indonesia’s aspiration to be at the forefront of the digital transformation era. The existence of a law on personal data is a crucial pillar in realizing a trustworthy and reliable digital transformation and ecosystem. In response to this, a public discussion among various stakeholders organized by the Tifa Foundation on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, agreed to urge the DPR and the Government to prioritize, finalize, and pass the Personal Data Protection Bill.

Currently, Indonesia needs to establish the principles and implementation mechanisms for the Personal Data Protection Act (PDP) in accordance with international standards, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) issued by the European Union. However, Indonesia also faces challenges in meeting these international standards and keeping pace with their evolution.
