Indonesian politics has succeeded in fostering public participation at both the national and local levels. Many transformative leaders have emerged since the dawn of Indonesia’s open democracy. However, on the other hand, a number of instruments of civil and political rights have deteriorated. Representation, which should serve the interests of the people, has been hijacked by elites and their groups.
