Currently, Indonesia needs to establish the principles and implementation mechanisms for the Personal Data Protection Act (PDP) in accordance with international standards, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) issued by the European Union. However, Indonesia also faces challenges in meeting these international standards and keeping pace with their evolution.
Due to its sensitive and personal nature, personal data must be protected—not only by its owners but also by the state through the regulations it enacts. The Personal Data Protection Act is seen as an instrument capable of striking a balance between innovation, the economy, and the protection of personal data in the digital realm.
The Pusaka Bentala Rakyat Foundation and the Tifa Foundation view this protection guide for environmental human rights defenders as an urgent necessity. It is hoped that this guidebook will strengthen and enhance the capacity of indigenous and local communities in their advocacy efforts to secure and protect their rights to land, livelihoods, and the environment, as well as their right to participate in shaping development in their communities.
